Earley Trends 2017

Earley Ornamentals Colour Trend Forecast for 2017-18

Ensuring the right on-trend colours are being grown here at Earley is becoming increasingly important and this year four key trends have been identified by Earley’s colour experts. See below to find out more about these trends and Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2017.
  • Luxurious Romantic - perfect for a sensory garden
  • Serene Harmony - an elegant trend layered with tranquil shades of blue and natural greens
  • Contemporary Collection - inspired by the world’s cultural icons
  • Hot Mix - conjures up a sense of the warm, summer jungle

Luxurious Romantic

Nemesia, Aroma, Rhubarb and CustardNemesia Easter Bonnet

Perfect for a sensory garden, highly popular Nemesia Easter Bonnet takes the lead in the Luxurious Romantic trend story. It combines delicate fragrance that arouses the senses, with light lemon yellow and soft pink tones.

Inspired by the sophistication of the French country garden and formal structure of Parisian design, plants such as Delphinium Blue Lace add height whilst the soft, double-flowered blooms of Ranunculus Maché F1 MixSunPatiens® Compact Blush Pink and Begonia Fortune F1 Salmon Bicolour encapsulate this trend perfectly.

However, it’s not all softness, this trend is counterbalanced with stronger pops of colour provided by new Geranium Ivy Leaf SEL® Royal® Red and the summery Dahlia Figaro Mix.

For garden designers looking to create landscapes and displays with a peaceful and simpler colour palette, Serene Harmony is an elegant trend layered with tranquil shades of blue and natural greens for a subtle look.

Beautifully scented, new Nemesia SunPeddle® Blue Rose provides amazing flower colour, and the lavender-blues and white colours of the Verbena Quartz XP Waterfall Mix also depict this trend.

For large pots look to Pericallis Senetti® Deep Blue and add gentle contrast through plants that provide pattern and texture, such as Lobelia Big Blue, or natural greens in the guise of foliage like Hedera Silver Variegated or Brunnera Alexander’s Great.

For stronger contrast use options such as Petunia Espresso F1 Blue – a great naturally dwarf plant with large flowers. Alternatively, more watery blue shades may be more appropriate such as those of Primrose Zebra F1 Blue; its novel striped flowers also adding a striking yet delicate pattern.

Contemporary Collection

Orange

An altogether warmer look, the Contemporary Collection is inspired by the world’s cultural icons - especially the tones associated with Asian style. Yet it’s not about tradition, earthy tones and contemporary geometric shapes can be introduced to gardens and displays embracing this trend.

Use unexpected oranges, like our award-winning SunPatiens® Compact Orange, graphic Gazania Sunbathers® Tikal or the rich warmth of Nemesia Sunsatia Plus® Grenada.

Tone these down with muted purples like the Pansy Silhouette F1 Mix and Calibrachoa Chameleon® Blueberry Scone or create stronger contrast with colours like Alyssum Easter Bonnet Violet and Bella® Fuchsia Vera.

Bidens SpotlightBidens Spotlight

Offering a refreshing trend ideal for compact gardening, Exotic Mix conjures up a sense of the warm, summer jungle. Sun-kissed yellows feature heavily with the likes of Bidens Spotlight, Begonia Non Stop® Joy Yellow providing stronger colour whilst Cosmos Xanthos Light Yellow or Primula Everlast, offer fresher, more subtle alternatives.

These can be combined with the cool oranges of Dahlia Dalina® Midi Barbados or Pansy Premier F1 Deep Orange, and complemented by the silvery foliage of Brachyglottis Walbert or the more structured yet colourful ornamental grass Carex elata Aurea for that wild exotic touch.

For 2017, Pantone's Colour of the Year is
Greenery - an ideal choice for ornamental horticulture.

A world-renowned authority on colour, Pantone describes Greenery as a "fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring". Easy to find in our Earley range, this shade pairs perfectly with neutrals, brights, deeper shades and pastels.

The power of colour trends is growing year-on-year. As we saw last year, used alone or together, the appearance of Pantone’s two 2016 colours, Rose Quartz - a gentle pink and Serenity - a cool blue, was apparent everywhere from horticulture, supermarket settings, home interiors to architecture and website design. It really demonstrates just how much demand there is to be on-trend. We anticipate these colours continuing to be prevalent this year too.

With a whole range of on-trend colours across our best-selling plant ranges, these shown illustrate the breadth of the Earley plant portfolio; all great commercial choices that will achieve results for 2017, both from a gardening perspective and in terms of performance at the tills.
