Reducing its carbon footprint Earley Ornamentals invests in biomass technology

Committed to innovation and investment, Earley Ornamentals has completed the installation of a biomass heating system that will create significant fossil fuel energy and CO
2 emissions savings for the environment.

Earley has commissioned the installation of two biomass boilers, with outputs of 950kW and 199kW respectively. Each one will heat separate areas and the combination of the two will service the site’s six acres of glasshouses.

D'Alessandro CSA GM
The bespoke installation of the Kalvis-MI and the smaller D’Alessandro CSA GM will transform the family-run business’ 12-acre site near Thirsk, saving a massive 664 tones of CO2 each year, and make Earley one of only a few growers in the region to adopt this approach to heating.

The Biomass Supply Team

The design and installation of the biomass heating system was co-ordinated by a specialist team who worked hard to retain the site's gas-oil system for back-up and disaster recovery purposes. This ystem used to consume up to 250k litres of heating oil per annum.

Working closely with biomass boiler supplier Ashwell Biomass Solutions, EBTech Solutions  plumbed the boilers into Earley’s system and electrical specialist TCE carried out the electrical work. All groundwork and the conversion of an existing barn, which will house eighteen tonnes of wood chips to fuel the biomass boilers, was completed by J.Kool Engineers.

Why biomass? Simon Earley explains

Simon Earley, Earley Ornamentals managing director explains the motivation behind the installation of the biomass system: “As an energy intensive business we are always looking at ways of reducing our impact on the environment, not to mention spiraling fuel costs. Biomass brings much lower carbon emissions, improves energy efficiency by more than 20% and, by sourcing the wood chips locally allows us to support our rural economy.”
